The craniosacral system includes the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord, along with the bones of the skull and the sacrum. During birth, the bones of the baby's skull compress and shift to allow passage through the birth canal — a normal and necessary process. In some cases, particularly after long or difficult labors, this compression does not fully resolve, and restrictions in the craniosacral system may persist. These restrictions can be subtle and are not detectable on standard medical imaging, but they can be assessed through the kind of light, skilled palpation that craniosacral therapy involves.
Dr. Bronstein uses craniosacral assessment as part of his colic evaluation at Beacon Clinic of Chiropractic for infants from San Luis Obispo and across California's central coast. The assessment involves sustained, very gentle contact at the skull, spine, and sacrum to evaluate the rhythm and mobility of the craniosacral system and identify any areas of restriction. It is not painful or distressing for the baby — many infants relax or fall asleep during craniosacral work. If restrictions are found, the treatment that follows is similarly light and gentle. Parents who have never encountered craniosacral therapy before are encouraged to ask Dr. Bronstein to explain what he is doing and what he is feeling during the assessment.
